The Ojai Bellydance Festival brings the top names in the Southern California World Music and Dance scene to Ojai for a day. The festival features live Balkan and Near Eastern music with guest artists from Los Angeles, Ankara, Istanbul, and San Francisco. Join the fun with a free dance class!

Ojai Bellydance Festival, now in its second year, offers an intriguing glimpse into the many styles of bellydance. Performances range from traditional North African folkloric to avant garde Modern Tribal Fusion. Performances run the gamut from award-winning professional performers to student troupes. The day show features live music with Ojai’s own Byzantium, while the night show features live music & open dance floor with the LA’s premiere Balkan Gypsy band, Lissima. Shop for exotic décor, jewelry, and couture dance fashions. Sample delicious Near Eastern food, too!

The festival is a fundraiser for Ojai’s GreenTech Village. Proceeds go toward the conversion of land in Meiners’ Oaks previously used as a junk yard which is now being converted to sustainable local food and power production.

Near Eastern Dance, often called ‚”Bellydance”, has experienced a tremendous upsurge in popularity. For perhaps the first time in history, many of the leading dancers are from the USA. American dancers now perform worldwide, from Paris to Rio de Janeiro. The popular Modern Fusion style incorporates jazz and hip-hip elements with more traditional Near Eastern dance.

The Ojai Bellydance Festival sponsors a Culture of Peace as part of our mission to foster peace and appreciation for cultural diversity. Tango to Istanbul is the first comprehensive and international event of IstanbulTANGO. The festival is designed as tango days during which many dancers from all over the world will share their knowledge and experience, dance with joy and establish new friendships. Unlike other festivals, during the day time , there will not only be lessons but other attractions. On Thursday and Friday, together with the festival participants, we will arrange a Bosphorus Tour by boat, and visit the Grand Bazaar and other important historical sites. This way, we believe that the participants will have a better Istanbul experience.

During the following festivities there will be awaiting for you: World-famous Maestros, 5 night shows, milongas at wonderful locations, Tango Cafe 333, “After Hour Party” after milongas, visits to Grand Bazaar and other historical sites, Bosphorus Tour, carefully selected courses at all levels, women’s technique seminars from Lucia Mazer, tango performances from International Heroes, international DJs, Tango footwear and clothing exhibition stands and a photo exhibition from Osman Çilsal.

In this event, Ezequiel Farfaro – Lucia Mazer, El Pajaro – Belen, Aydın Kocamusaoglu- Pelin Koyun and Claudio Forte – Barbara Carpino will be with us at workshops and tango shows. This year’s meeting is very special. The world-wide famous dancers, Ezequiel Farfaro and Lucia Mazer come together again. In addition, with the women’s technique seminars of Lucia Mazer all women will make significant contributions to our festival.

At 2010 Istanbul becomes the European Capital of Culture. All historical sites and museums in Istanbul are preparing special presentations. Together with the Thursday participants, we will visit these places. On Friday, we will take the Bosphorus Tour, during which we have prepared a surprise for the participants.

For the first time in Istanbul, this year, we are organizing a daytime milonga on Saturday and Sunday at Tango Cafe 333 which has a gorgeus view of the Bosphorus. The day-time milongas will be from 16:30 to 19:00 and give you the opportunity to dance during the day.The “After Hour Party” will take place till the mornings after the Milongas every night. More information on the “After Hour Party”s will be announced soon.

The world famous Maestros together with carefully selected International Guest Dancers will be with you. Andre-Andrea from Romaina, Sergei-Vera from Russia, Loukas-Georgia from Greece, Umut-Mine from Ankara will have amazing shows.

As one of the world famous Argentine Tango instructors says “The music is the leader” Therefore, we have arranged for well known DJs who will make you dance till the morning with their carefully selected choices. Luca Lamberti from Italy, Brian Falk from Denmark, Ömer Bayraktar, Cenker Uzun and Murat Elmadagli (from Turkey) are preparing their best selection for you.

Rules & Regulations
Categories
(A) Amateur – who has not received regular compensation for competition, instruction, or performance.

(B) Professional – who receives money for teaching, competing, or performing. This division is for the experienced competitor and the professional instructors/dancers.

(C)Team – Open. Maximum of 20 in a team.

Length of Dance – Max 3 mins

Music
Competitors need to provide two ready-to-be-played CDs. One track per CD.
The DJ will not slow down or speed up your music for you.

Judging Guidelines
All Categories will be judged with by the following criteria:
- Technical Merit – 40%
- Artistic Impression – 40%
- Audience Reaction -20%

Judging Composition
The technical merit grade has 3 key components:
a. Execution: The excellence / accuracy of styles

b. Synchronization: The aptitude to go one with the other and to shift with the music.

c. Difficulty: the difficulty and variety of the moves

The artistic impression has 3 key elements:

a) Choreography: The diversity and originality of the moves, appropriateness of outfits, the use of the stage space

b) Music Interpretation: The use of movement to elucidate the melody, its dynamic and rhythmic properties.

c) Manner of Presentation: The carriage with which the routine is performed, the aptitude to commune thru the choreography, and the apparent easiness of the presentations.
